In the world of model railroading, the S Scale is known as one of the oldest gauges. When many collectors think of S gauge, they think of American Flyer, simply because American Flyer trains were the most popular of S Scale models. American Flyer S gauge trains were first introduced in the 1930’s, marketed as a train that operated on three rails. It wasn’t until the mid 1940’s that American Flyer brought forward a S Scale train that ran on a two rail track. Selection of S Scale trains were quite limited from the beginning, but more selection and higher quality S gauge products exist today.
